Hells Angels don't come cheap

Yesterday we reported that the Duluth Police Department spent $75,000 on overtime hours for the Hells Angels Rally. The rationale was the bikers would come to Duluth, spend money, and the city would reap rewards in tourism taxes. Plus, OT was needed to keep the community safe, in case any of them got a little restless.

Fortunately nothing too out-of-control happened. But, I'm not entirely convinced the Angels spent a lot of time and money at the Irvin, Fitgers or Great Lakes Aquarium, etc.

If you are wondering whether the OT was worth it--don't worry, it's not coming out of the city's pocket.

Deputy Chief John Beyer said the OT would be paid for with federal and regional grants. Feel better--or worse?

With the help of reporter Laura Kennedy, here is a rundown of which grants are being used:

Operation Stone Garden federal grant (one of its many purposes is to fund additional security for places with international connections)

Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF)--through a federal partnership, local law enforcement agencies can get money for investigations/events related to organized crime and drugs

Northeast Law Enforcement Administrators Council (NLEAC)--Duluth PD is a member, so they can take advantage of federal funding to the council
