$$$ for playgrounds

Councilor Todd Fedora has come up with a plan that he says will help replace some of the seven playgrounds the city deemed unsafe and tore down a couple years ago.

He is calling it the "Neighborhood Playground Equipment Revitalization Grant Program".

The idea came to him after meeting with several Morley Heights residents who are trying to raise money on their own to get the equipment replaced.

Fedora says he was impressed with the motivation of the residents who are planning to raise money through rummage sales, fairs, grant writing, etc. to help pay for the cost of neighborhood park equipment.

On Monday, councilors will get a first look at Fedora's resolution that would allow the city to match 50/50 whatever these residents and others raise to replace the equipment.

So by putting the onus of paying for playgrounds on the local residents, wealthy neighborhoods will get playgrounds and poorer neighborhoods will have to wait?

That sounds about right George. Actually, since a playground costs about $30K and 6 were removed, they could have each adult in Duluth (60,000) chip in $3 and all can be replaced. But, the last thing anyone wants is another fee....screw the kids.
